In short: Spanning over 105,000 square kilometers, the Ganges Delta is the world's largest river delta. It is a hyper-fertile landscape of labyrinthine channels and swamps, serving as a vital lifeline for much of Bangladesh and West Bengal, even as it faces unprecedented ecological and climatic threats.

The Ganges Delta, often called the Green Delta, is an arc-shaped expanse formed by the combined waters of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. This massive system carries fine alluvial sediments from Himalayan glaciers, depositing them as currents slow in the estuary. This process has extended the delta roughly 400 kilometers seaward since the Eocene. The region is divided by the Gorai-Madhumati River into a geologically young, active eastern delta and an older, less active western portion.

The delta's fertility supports a staggering population. While some estimates suggest upwards of 300 million people are supported by the delta, others note that approximately 400 million people live within the broader Ganges River Basin. The region is one of the most densely populated on Earth, with much of the delta exceeding 200 people per square kilometer. However, this density comes with extreme vulnerability; the area faces catastrophic risks from monsoon floods, Himalayan meltwater runoff, and tropical cyclones.

Human intervention has fundamentally altered the delta's natural mechanics. Since the late 1600s, colonial-era permanent levees and 20th-century polders have interfered with natural sedimentation. While intended to manage water, these structures often cause rivers to choke on their own silt and allow saltwater intrusion, which can damage rice paddies. Today, the region faces a dual challenge: managing the legacy of infrastructure maladaptation and preparing for a sea-level rise that could displace six million people in Bangladesh alone.
