Gujrat: A Pakistani city built on the ruins of shifting empires and ancient rivers.
In short: Located in the northern Punjab province of Pakistan, Gujrat is a city of deep antiquity. Once a strategic site for Mughal emperors and a battleground for British forces, it now serves as a key industrial hub, forming part of the region's famous Golden Triangle of manufacturing and export.
Gujrat sits just north of the Chenab River, a position that has defined its history for millennia. The city is not a singular creation but a succession of settlements built upon one another. While local legends link its early foundations to the era of King Porus and the aftermath of Alexander the Great’s invasion in 326 BC, the modern city’s identity was solidified during the Mughal era. Emperor Akbar, recognizing the site's strategic importance, commissioned the construction of the Gujrat Fort in the late 16th century and encouraged the local Gujjar tribe to settle within its walls.
The city's name is tied to this Gujjar heritage, though its history is marked by the influence of diverse rulers, from the Mauryas and Indo-Greeks to the Alchon Huns and the Durrani Afghans. By the 18th century, the region suffered through the chaotic collapse of Mughal authority, including the devastating 1738 invasion by Nader Shah, whose forces pillaged the town. Stability eventually returned under British rule following the 1849 Battle of Gujrat, which marked the end of Sikh power in the area.
Today, Gujrat has transformed from a historic fort town into a vital economic engine. Alongside Sialkot and Gujranwala, it forms the 'Golden Triangle of Punjab,' a cluster of cities driving Pakistan's industrial output. The city is known for producing textiles, machinery, and electrical appliances, reflecting a shift from its ancient, agrarian roots to a modern, export-oriented economy. Despite this rapid industrialization, the city retains its cultural significance, famously serving as the setting for the classical Punjabi folktale of Sohni Mahiwal.
