How a massive glacial retreat created Indiana's only national park and its dunes
In short: Indiana Dunes National Park is a landscape defined by ancient ice. Formed by the retreat of the Michigan Lobe glacier over 20,000 years ago, this unique ecosystem features rare plants, diverse wildlife, and a complex geological history that continues to shape the southern shore of Lake Michigan today.
The story of Indiana Dunes begins roughly 40,000 years ago with the formation of the Valparaiso Moraine, a geological feature that dictated the landscape's evolution. As glaciers retreated during the Wisconsin Glacial Period, they left behind a series of recessional moraines—the Tinley and Lake Border—which acted as dams for meltwater. This process created four distinct glacial lake stages, including Lake Chicago and the Nipissing Great Lakes, which deposited the sand that eventually formed the dunes.
Ecological preservation here has deep roots, sparked by botanist Henry Chandler Cowles in 1899. His research into the unique flora of the dunes highlighted the area's scientific importance, leading to a long-term conservation movement. By the 1950s, activists like Dorothy Richardson Buell and Hazel Hannell formed the Save the Dunes Council to protect the land from industrial development, eventually securing the creation of a national lakeshore in 1966. In 2019, the site was officially redesignated as the nation's 61st national park.
Today, the park serves as a critical habitat for over 1,400 vascular plant species and nearly 370 bird species. It remains a dynamic environment where littoral currents continue to transport sand, maintaining the dunes and interdunal ponds. Despite its beauty, the park presents natural challenges, such as dangerous rip currents in the summer and shifting shelf ice in the winter, reminding visitors that this landscape is still being actively shaped by the power of Lake Michigan.
