In short: The towering dunes of Michigan's Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore aren't true dunes. They are a geological anomaly: a thin layer of wind-blown sand resting atop a massive deposit of glacial debris. This unique formation was sculpted by the Wisconsin glaciation roughly 10,000 to 14,000 years ago.

Roughly 10,000–14,000 years ago, the Last Glacial Period shaped this terrain. While the sand appears to be a primary landform, it is technically a 'perched dune.' This means the sand is not rooted in the underlying bedrock but sits as a distinct layer on top of glacial debris left behind by retreating ice. Over time, these dunes have slowly migrated eastward across the shoreline of Lake Michigan. The park's creation in 1970 was a complex negotiation between federal goals and local identity. The federal government viewed the Great Lakes as a 'third coast' requiring preservation similar to Cape Hatteras. However, local residents feared a tourist influx would destroy their lifestyle as stewards of the land.

To reach an agreement, the government supported local schools to offset lost property taxes and included the North Manitou Island in the protected area. Cultural layers sit atop this glacial history. The region is steeped in Ojibwe legend, which attributes the dunes to a mother bear waiting for her cubs, who were turned into the Manitou Islands by the Great Spirit. This folklore coexists with a tangible maritime and agricultural history, including the 1871 South Manitou Island Lighthouse, former Life-Saving Service stations, and the Port Oneida Historic Farm District, which preserves 16 historic farms from a community once abandoned due to hard farming conditions.
