From law student to Star Wars warrior: the versatile career of Natasha Liu Bordizzo
In short: Before she was a Mandalorian warrior in the Disney+ series Ahsoka, Natasha Liu Bordizzo was preparing for a dual degree in Law and Communication. Discover how a black belt in taekwondo and intensive martial arts training helped propel this Australian actress from Sydney to Hollywood.
Born in Sydney on 25 August 1994, Natasha Liu Bordizzo’s path to international stardom was unexpectedly sudden. Before starting her Law and Communication degree at the University of Technology Sydney, she secured a principal part in the 2016 Netflix production Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. To prepare for the role of Snow Vase, Bordizzo underwent rigorous training in Wudang sword fighting under the direction of Yuen Woo-ping. Her heritage is a blend of Chinese and Italian descent, reflecting a multicultural background.
Her physical training extends beyond the screen; she holds a black belt in taekwondo and has also trained in Kenpō karate. She has speculated that her casting for the wuxia film was influenced by her age, appearance, English fluency, and martial arts proficiency. Following her breakout, she moved to Los Angeles in 2016 to pursue her acting career globally. Beyond her film work, she has served as a brand ambassador for Chanel and has also modelled for the Australian label Bonds.
Bordizzo's filmography spans diverse genres, from the American musical The Greatest Showman in 2017 to the vampire action-comedy Day Shift in 2022. She has also appeared in thrillers like The Voyeurs, a 2021 Amazon Prime film shot in Montreal, and Hotel Mumbai, a 2018 film inspired by the 2008 attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. In 2023, she joined the Star Wars universe as the character Sabine Wren in the series Ahsoka. Looking forward, she is set to star in the 2025 Stan Originals series He Had It Coming. Her voice work includes the animated comedy Wish Dragon, where she voiced the character Li Na Wang. Additionally, she appeared in the Netflix series The Society in 2019.
