In short: Hidden at the base of the towering Capo Caccia cliffs in Sardinia, Neptune's Grotto is a breathtaking stalactite cave system. Discovered by fishermen in the 18th century, this sea-level marvel features a saltwater lake and intricate rock formations, accessible only when the Mediterranean waters are calm enough for safe entry.

Neptune's Grotto, or Grotta di Nettuno, is a geological landmark situated near Alghero. The cave's entrance sits a mere one metre above sea level, making it highly sensitive to weather conditions. Visitors can reach the site via a boat trip from Alghero or by descending the escala del cabirol, a steep stairway of 654 steps carved directly into the cliffside in 1954. The cliff itself rises 110 metres above the water, creating a dramatic backdrop for this natural attraction.

While the entire cave system spans an estimated four kilometres, only about 300 metres are open to the public. Inside, guided tours lasting one hour lead visitors through illuminated passages filled with stalactites and stalagmites. A central feature is a 120-metre-long saltwater lake that sits at sea level. Historically, the grotto served as a habitat for the Mediterranean monk seal, though the species is now extinct in this specific area. The surrounding underwater environment is equally significant, hosting the Nereo Cave, a renowned destination for thousands of scuba divers annually.

The grotto's unique atmosphere has occasionally drawn the attention of the film industry. In the summer of 1978, the cave was repurposed as a massive set for the science fiction film Island of the Fishmen, directed by Sergio Martino and starring Barbara Bach and Claudio Cassinelli. The production occupied the space for approximately two months. Today, the grotto remains a popular tourist destination, capable of hosting up to 200 people simultaneously during the peak month of August, with guides providing commentary in both Italian and English.
