How a Genoese Palace Evolved Through Centuries of Architectural Innovation and Urban Expansion
In short: Located in the heart of Genoa, the Palazzo Lomellini-Doria Lamba stands as a testament to the city's evolving urban landscape. Originally a sixteenth-century structure, it underwent a dramatic transformation in the late 1700s, becoming a key component of the UNESCO-recognized Rolli di Genova heritage sites that define the city's history.
The origins of this historic residence date back to the late sixteenth century, when it first appeared in the official Genoese rolls between 1588 and 1664. At that time, the building served as the core of what would eventually become a much larger complex. The structure remained relatively modest until 1776, when Gian Tommaso Balbi commissioned the architect Gregorio Petondi to undertake a significant renovation and expansion project.
Petondi’s work coincided with the development of the Strada Nuovissima, now known as Via Cairoli, which was constructed between 1778 and 1786. By annexing two adjacent plots of land, Petondi expanded the palace to its current dimensions, granting it dual frontage on both Via Lomellini and the newly established street. This strategic expansion allowed for a dual-entrance configuration, mirroring the design of the neighboring property owned by Marco Lomellini. Petondi’s design was noted for its complex, scenographic layout, which linked various atriums and upper-floor chambers while reviving the grand staircase traditions established by Bartolomeo Bianco during the sixteenth century.
By 1798, the site still retained the loggia associated with the original Lomellini family residence. Today, the building is known as the Palazzo Lomellini-Doria Lamba, reflecting its current ownership by the Doria Lamba family. While it has transitioned from its aristocratic roots to house a mix of modern offices and private residences, it remains a protected piece of cultural history. In July 2006, it was officially designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, representing one of the forty-two palaces included in the Rolli di Genova collection.
