In short: Deep in Iran’s Khuzestan province lies the Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, a Sasanian-era masterpiece of dams, bridges, and tunnels. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2009, this complex of 13 interconnected structures transformed the landscape, enabling agriculture and orchards to thrive in an otherwise arid region.

The Shushtar system is a sophisticated network of infrastructure that dates back to the Sasanian era, though some components may originate from the time of Achaemenid ruler Darius the Great. The system functions as a single, integrated unit, utilizing diversion canals like the Shutayt and Gargar to channel water from the Karun River. This water is then directed through tunnels and over dams to power water mills and irrigate the Mianâb plain, an island where the city of Shushtar sits at the northern end.

A central feature of this engineering feat is the Band-e Kaisar, or Caesar’s dam. Constructed in the 3rd century AD by a Roman workforce under Sassanid orders, this approximately 500-metre-long structure was the first in Iran to combine a bridge with a dam. It served as the most eastern Roman dam ever built, working alongside the Mizan Dam to retain and divert river water. The site also includes the Salasel Castle, which serves as the operational axis for the entire system, and various specialized structures like the Dahaneye Shahr tunnel and the Bolayti Canal, designed to protect the water mills from damage.

UNESCO has lauded the site as a masterpiece of creative genius, highlighting its unique role in ancient agricultural development. The system’s ability to manage water levels through towers and basins demonstrates a level of technical foresight that allowed for sustained farming in the surrounding plains. By blending Roman construction techniques with Sassanid agricultural needs, the Shushtar system remains a testament to the ingenuity of ancient civilizations in mastering their environment to support urban life and economic prosperity.
