In short: With the International Space Station's retirement approaching, the European Space Agency is launching a bold new mission. The EPIC project aims to ensure European career astronauts continue to lead vital research and maintenance operations in orbit before the station's era comes to an end.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced the EPIC project, a mission designed to charter a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. Announced by Director General Josef Aschbacher following an ESA Council meeting in Interlaken, Switzerland, the mission aims to provide expanded access to space for the agency's professional astronauts. Unlike private missions that typically last about two weeks, the EPIC crew—comprising four professional astronauts—is expected to spend approximately one month in orbit.

The mission, planned for launch in early 2028, will focus on more than just research. While the station serves as a laboratory for disciplines ranging from astrophysics to microbiology, the EPIC crew will also participate in critical maintenance, repair, and logistics operations. This mission is part of a broader effort to utilize the station's unique microgravity environment, which is currently located more than 200 miles (320 km) above Earth, to develop commercial technologies and medical breakthroughs.

The timing of this mission is critical as the ISS is currently scheduled for deorbit in 2030, marking the end of 30 years of permanent occupation. However, the future of the station remains a subject of debate; some U.S. senators have proposed extending its life to September 2032 to maintain a continuous human presence in low Earth orbit. For ESA, the EPIC mission represents a vital opportunity to maximize the scientific and operational experience of its career astronauts before the station's departure.
