How a Thai football club rose from relegation to continental competition
In short: Founded in 2004, Ratchaburi F.C. has navigated a volatile path through the Thai leagues. From facing relegation in 2008 to qualifying for the AFC Champions League Elite, the 'Dragons' have transformed from provincial underdogs into a significant force in Southeast Asian football.
The ascent of Ratchaburi F.C. was marked by significant structural shifts and administrative changes. After being founded in 2004, the club struggled in its early years, finishing last in Group A of the Division 2 in 2007 and facing relegation in 2008. However, a restructuring by the Football Association of Thailand allowed them to continue competing in the second tier in 2009. A turning point arrived in 2010 when the Nitikarnchana family took over the club, leading to a period of rapid growth and promotion to the top flight.
The club's identity and infrastructure have evolved alongside its competitive success. Originally known as Ratchaburi Mitr Phol due to a sponsorship with the Mitr Phol Group, the club reverted to its original name in 2022 after a decade-long partnership. This era also saw the construction of their own home, Dragon Solar Park, which opened in mid-2016. This 10,000-seat stadium replaced the Ratchaburi Provincial Stadium, which the club had used since 2007.
On the pitch, the Dragons have achieved notable continental milestones. They first qualified for the AFC Champions League in 2021 after a strong 2020–21 season. More recently, their performance in the 2025–26 AFC Champions League Two saw them reach the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Gamba Osaka. This success secured them direct qualification for the 2026–27 AFC Champions League Elite, cementing their status as a top-tier competitor in the region.
