How a provincial underdog upset Thai giants to claim major silverware
In short: Founded in 2009 with a limited budget and a tenth-place finish, PT Prachuap F.C. has transformed from a struggling regional side into a top-flight competitor. Their meteoric rise culminated in a historic 2019 victory that stunned the giants of Thai football.
The journey of PT Prachuap F.C. began in 2009 in the Regional League Division 2 Central & Eastern region. In those early years, the club struggled with a limited budget and environmental constraints, finishing tenth out of 12 teams. By 2010, financial and safety concerns forced the club to move to the Southern division, a period of transition that saw the appointment of chairman Songkiat Lim-aroonrak, who sought to reshape the club's philosophy for future success.
A pivotal turning point arrived in 2017 when the club rebranded as PT Prachuap to honor its main sponsor, PTG Energy. This partnership provided the resources necessary to strengthen the squad with 20 new players and professional coaching, led by head coach Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul. This investment propelled the club to a third-place finish in the 2017 Thai League 2, securing their first-ever promotion to the top flight.
The club's zenith came in 2019, a year that saw them cement their place among Thailand's elite. After a strong debut season in the top flight in 2018, PT Prachuap achieved their first and only major honour by winning the 2019 Thai League Cup. They secured the title in a dramatic fashion, defeating giants Buriram United 8–7 on penalties following a semi-final victory over Chiangrai United. The triumph was highlighted by goalkeeper Nattapong Khajohnmalee, who earned the tournament's 'Best Player' award.
Today, the club plays its home matches at the Sam Ao Stadium in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a venue with a capacity of up to 5,000. From its humble beginnings in the regional leagues to its status as a top-flight contender, the club's evolution remains a significant story of perseverance in Thai professional football.
