Created by David Macpherson, The Rig stands as the first Amazon Original production filmed entirely in Scotland. The series, which debuted its first six-episode run on 6 January 2023, draws inspiration from the real-world experiences of Macpherson’s father in the oil and gas sector. Development began in December 2018, with the project officially greenlit by Amazon in November 2020. Production utilized a custom-built, three-storey rig set at FirstStage Studios in Edinburgh, supplemented by location work on an actual Scottish oil platform.
The narrative centers on the Kinloch Bravo crew, led by offshore installation manager Magnus MacMillan, played by Iain Glen. The ensemble cast includes Emily Hampshire as Rose Mason, a company representative and scientist who investigates the mysterious spores causing the crew's erratic behavior. As the fog severs communication with the outside world, the isolation fosters internal tension, particularly among long-term crew members like Lars Hutton. The series blends elements of an eco-thriller with supernatural mystery, focusing on the discovery of a biological entity disturbed by industrial activity.
Critical reception has been generally favorable, with Metacritic awarding the first series a score of 69 out of 100. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 67% approval rating, with critics noting that while the show occasionally relies on genre tropes, its strong performances and immersive atmosphere provide a compelling viewing experience. Following the success of the initial episodes, Amazon renewed the show in February 2023. The second series, which expanded the cast to include characters like Pictor CEO Morgan Lennox and diver Kyle Cameron, premiered on 2 January 2025.
