The Blue Java banana tastes like vanilla custard and survives in cooler climates
In short: Known for its silvery-blue skin and ice cream-like texture, the Blue Java banana is a unique hybrid that defies typical tropical expectations. This hardy plant is prized not just for its aromatic, sweet fruit, but also for its resilience against wind and cold, making it a standout choice for home growers.
The Blue Java banana, scientifically classified as Musa acuminata × balbisiana (ABB Group) 'Blue Java', is a triploid hybrid originating from Southeast Asia. It is the result of cross-breeding two specific species, Musa balbisiana and Musa acuminata. Because of its distinct flavor profile, which many describe as reminiscent of vanilla custard, it is frequently referred to as the Ice Cream banana in regions like Hawaii.
Beyond its culinary appeal, the plant is physically impressive, reaching heights between 4.5 and 6 metres. Its pseudostems and root systems are notably robust, providing the tree with significant wind resistance and the ability to thrive in temperate climates where other banana varieties might struggle. The leaves possess a silvery-green hue, and the unripe fruit is coated in a heavy wax that gives it a striking blue appearance before it transitions to a pale yellow upon ripening.
Cultivation requires patience, as the tree typically blooms 15 to 24 months after being planted. Once the fruit bunches appear, they generally take between 115 and 150 days to reach harvest maturity. Each bunch is relatively small, consisting of seven to nine hands of fruit, with individual bananas measuring 18 to 23 centimetres in length. These fruits are easily identifiable by their bumpy surface, often described as knuckles, which adds to the plant's unusual aesthetic.
Global naming conventions for this cultivar vary widely, reflecting its popularity across different cultures. In Indonesia, it is called Kepok Awu, while in the Philippines, it is known as Krie. Central American growers often refer to it as Cenizo, and in Fiji, it is recognized as the Hawaiian banana. Whether grown for its ornamental value as a shade plant or for its edible, creamy fruit, the Blue Java remains a versatile and resilient addition to any garden.
