In short: In just a few years, Bryce Underwood has transitioned from a high school phenom to a record-breaking collegiate star. After dominating Michigan high school football with unprecedented touchdown numbers, the consensus top recruit in the nation has become a cornerstone for the Michigan Wolverines.

Born in Detroit on August 19, 2007, Bryce Underwood’s ascent through the ranks of high school football was nothing short of historic. Playing for Belleville High School, he became a dominant force, leading the Tigers to consecutive state championships in 2021 and 2022. While in secondary school, Underwood proved to be a highly productive dual-threat quarterback, setting two MHSAA state records on 13 September 2024 for total career touchdowns and passing touchdowns.

Upon completing his high school years, Underwood had accumulated 179 total touchdowns and 12,919 all-purpose yards, featuring 152 passing touchdowns which established a new state record. This performance earned him the title of the consensus No. 1 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class, with major outlets like ESPN, 247Sports, and On3 all ranking him at the top.

His transition to the University of Michigan was marked by a high-profile commitment flip; originally pledging to LSU on January 6, 2024, he switched his allegiance to the Wolverines on November 21, 2024. Since his debut, he has already made history, becoming the first true freshman to appear on the cover of EA Sports College Football 26 and the first since 2009 to start a season opener for Michigan.

Underwood's impact was immediate. In his collegiate debut against New Mexico, he set a program record for a freshman quarterback with 251 passing yards. His rapid progression continued into his sophomore season, where he was voted the first sophomore captain in modern Michigan history, a role traditionally reserved for seniors.
