In short: Commissioned by Cardinal Cisneros, the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso stands as a monumental testament to Renaissance architecture. From its foundation in 1499 to its final completion in the late 1600s, this historic site evolved through the hands of master architects, eventually earning recognition as a protected cultural landmark.

The story of the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso begins in 1499, when Cardinal Cisneros initiated the project in Alcalá de Henares. He entrusted the design to architect Pedro de Gumiel, setting in motion a construction process that would span nearly two centuries. The site quickly became a focal point for architectural innovation, with the Saint Ildefonsus' Chapel reaching completion by 1510. This early phase established the building's prestige, which only grew as subsequent additions were integrated into the structure.

As the 16th century progressed, the building continued to expand and evolve. In 1516, work commenced on the Paraninfo, or auditorium, which remains a significant feature of the complex. By 1537, the architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón was commissioned to design the main façade, a task that added a layer of artistic sophistication to the exterior. These developments reflected the shifting aesthetic priorities of the era, blending functional academic spaces with the grand architectural styles favored by the Spanish elite.

The final stages of construction were marked by further refinements, including the redesign of the courtyard, known as Thomas of Villanova's courtyard, by Juan Gómez de Mora in 1617. While the majority of the structural work was finished by this time, the entire project did not reach its final state until the latter half of the 17th century. Today, the building serves as a vital piece of history, having been officially declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1914, ensuring its preservation for future generations to study and admire.
