In short: Journey into Imagination with Figment is the third iteration of a classic Epcot attraction. Since 1983, the ride has undergone dramatic transformations, shedding original characters, enduring negative critical reception, and navigating multiple renovations. Today, the mischievous dragon Figment remains a centerpiece, though his role and environment have evolved significantly over decades.

The original Journey into Imagination opened on March 5, 1983, featuring the Dreamfinder and his creation, Figment. Designed by Tony Baxter and Steve Kirk, the ride used omnimover vehicles to transport guests through scenes representing Art, Literature, Performing Arts, and Science. It concluded in the ImageWorks playground, a space filled with interactive exhibits like the Rainbow Corridor and giant kaleidoscopes. This version was celebrated for its immersive storytelling, which allowed guests to bond with the characters within four minutes.

By 1999, the attraction was replaced by Journey Into YOUR Imagination, a version heavily criticized for its shortened track and the absence of the Dreamfinder. Dr. Nigel Channing, played by Eric Idle, hosted this tour of the Imagination Institute, which focused on sensory labs. The negative response was so intense that the ride closed in 2001 after only two years. It reopened in 2002 as Journey into Imagination with Figment, which brought back the classic song 'One Little Spark' and gave the dragon a more prominent, mischievous role, though the Dreamfinder remained absent.

The pavilion has seen significant shifts in corporate sponsorship and physical layout. Kodak sponsored the pavilion for nearly 28 years until 2010. While the original upstairs ImageWorks was largely dismantled after 1998, a new version, 'What If?' Labs, opened on the first floor. Recent developments suggest a return to the attraction's roots; at the August 2026 D23 fan event, it was announced that the Dreamfinder will return alongside Figment in a future reimagining of the ride, marking a new chapter for the long-standing Epcot staple.
