The Moon is a celestial dancer locked in a permanent embrace

One Side of the Moon ALWAYS Faces Us. Why is that? | Tidal Locking · 9:53 · Video: The Science Asylum · Watch at the source

In short: We only ever see one side of the Moon, but it isn't because the moon is static. It is actually spinning—just at exactly the same rate it orbits our planet. This cosmic synchronization is a result of a violent gravitational tug-of-war that began at the Moon's birth.

This phenomenon is known as synchronous rotation or tidal locking. It occurs when an object's rotational period matches its orbital period. In our solar system, this is not a rare anomaly; all of the large moons are tidally locked to their parent planets. Evidence also suggests that some binary stars and many exoplanets beyond our solar system share this same physical state.

The Moon’s journey toward this lock began shortly after its formation, likely following a massive collision with Earth early in history. At that time, the Moon was a hot, molten mass spinning wildly. Because it was closer to Earth and less solid, Earth's gravity exerted a powerful influence, distorting the Moon into a slight football shape. As the Moon spun, this gravitational bulge would shift out of alignment with Earth, creating a constant internal tug-of-war.

This friction generated significant heat within the Moon's interior. As that energy dissipated over hundreds of thousands of orbits, the Moon’s rotation gradually slowed. The rotation eventually slowed to a pace matching its orbital period around our planet. At this equilibrium, the bulge stopped shifting relative to our planet, and the spin rate stabilized.

The process is not entirely finished. While the rotation has locked, similar tidal forces are currently adding energy to the Moon's orbit. This causes the Moon to slowly drift away from Earth even as it maintains its permanent face-to-face orientation.
