The Moon is slowly drifting away from Earth due to tidal friction

Why the Moon is Spiraling Away From Us · 13:27 · Video: StarTalk · Watch at the source

In short: We see the same face of the Moon every night, but that constant gaze hides a slow-motion migration. The Moon is currently drifting away from our planet, a process driven by the same gravitational forces that create our tides. It is a cosmic tug-of-war that reshapes our orbits.

The Moon's constant orientation toward Earth is a result of synchronous tidal locking. This occurred early in the Moon's history, likely shortly after its formation from a massive collision. Initially, the Moon was a hot, molten object spinning wildly. Earth's gravity distorted it into a slight football shape, creating a bulge that was constantly out of alignment with the Earth. As the Moon spun, this bulge shifted, and the friction of the material moving against itself released energy as heat, gradually slowing the Moon's rotation until it matched its orbital period.

This same mechanism is currently pushing the Moon further into space. Because the Earth rotates, it drags the ocean's tidal bulges slightly ahead of the Moon's position. These liquid bulges exert a gravitational pull back on the Moon, adding energy to its orbit. While the Moon's rotation has stabilized, this ongoing exchange of energy causes it to spiral outward. Scientists use laser ranging—bouncing lasers off mirrors placed on the lunar surface—to measure this movement with extreme precision.

The Moon is currently receding at a rate of about 3.78 centimeters (approximately 1.5 inches) per year. Based on current calculations, this drift will continue for about 15 billion years before the Moon eventually stops moving away. This timeline places the Moon's migration well beyond the expected 6 to 7 billion years before the Sun enters its Red Giant phase and potentially engulfs the inner planets.
