The decade of the bustle and the S-shaped silhouette
In short: In the 1880s, Western fashion abandoned the lean lines of the previous decade for a dramatic, curvy silhouette. Driven by rigid corsetry and massive back structures, the era's aesthetic prioritized extreme shapes over comfort, sparking a counter-movement of radical dress reform.
The 1880s were defined by a dramatic return to the bustle, a structural element that reached its peak between 1886 and 1888. During this period, the silhouette shifted from the long, slender lines of the late 1870s toward a fuller, more curvaceous form. This look was achieved through heavy drapery, frills, and ribbons that extended straight out from the back waist. To balance this rear volume, fashionable women used rigid corsetry to create a low, full bust, resulting in a distinctive S-shaped profile that foreshadowed the even more radical shapes of the early 1900s.
This emphasis on extreme shaping led to the rise of the 'hobble-skirt,' so named for the restrictive tightness of the garments. While mainstream fashion focused on these structured, often uncomfortable forms, an undercurrent of 'artistic dress' emerged within Bohemian circles. This aesthetic movement rejected heavy drapery and stiff corsets in favor of simpler, loosely fitted garments made from beautiful fabrics. This influence even reached the domestic sphere through the tea gown, a relaxed garment worn even when receiving guests at home.
The decade also saw the emergence of specialized attire for different social activities. Riding habits became a standardized 'uniform' consisting of a matching jacket and skirt, often worn without a bustle to allow for movement. In contrast, hunting costumes remained highly stylized with draped, ankle-length skirts. Even the accessories were highly specific; for example, choker necklaces became fashionable following the influence of Alexandra, Princess of Wales, who used them to mask a scar on her neck.
