Why Andy Reid stands alone as the NFL's longest-tenured head coach in 2026
In short: The Kansas City Chiefs enter their 2026 campaign under a familiar face, but the league landscape has shifted dramatically. With the departures of long-time rivals in Pittsburgh and Baltimore, Andy Reid now holds the title of the NFL's longest-tenured head coach, a position he has maintained since his arrival in 2013.
The 2026 season marks a significant milestone for the Kansas City Chiefs, representing their 57th year in the National Football League and their 67th season overall. Under the continued guidance of general manager Brett Veach, now in his tenth year, and head coach Andy Reid, entering his 14th, the organization is focused on a clear objective: rebounding from a difficult 6–11 finish in 2025. The team aims to return to the postseason after a one-year hiatus and reclaim dominance in the AFC West.
The coaching landscape of the NFL underwent a seismic shift leading into 2026. The resignation of Mike Tomlin from the Pittsburgh Steelers and the firing of John Harbaugh by the Baltimore Ravens left a void in league leadership. This turnover solidified Andy Reid's status as the senior statesman among active head coaches, a tenure that began in 2013. His longevity provides a rare element of stability in a league defined by rapid change and high-stakes performance pressure.
Early results in 2026 suggest a positive trajectory for the team. The Chiefs began their season with a 3–0 record, achieving this start for the first time since 2024. This momentum follows a challenging period that included a six-game losing streak spanning the end of the 2025 season. By securing a victory against Denver, the team also ended a three-game losing streak against their division rival. As the season progresses, the team must navigate the complexities of flexible scheduling, which allows networks to adjust broadcast times and dates for games between Weeks 5 and 17, excluding the Thanksgiving-adjacent Week 12. Final determinations for the concluding weeks of the season will be made as the schedule reaches its final stretch.
