Coastal plains are the flat, low-lying borders where land meets the sea
In short: These expansive, level landscapes are not merely static edges of continents. They emerge through dramatic geological shifts, either by the receding of ancient ocean levels or the relentless accumulation of river-borne sediment. From the vast stretches of North America to the Indian coastline, these plains shape our world.
Coastal plains represent a distinct geomorphological category defined by their flat, low-lying topography adjacent to the sea. They are typically demarcated from inland upland regions by a fall line, serving as a boundary between the coastal lowland and higher terrain. These regions are often physically separated from the continental interior by proximate landforms, such as mountain ranges, which isolate them from the broader landscape.
The formation of these plains follows two primary mechanisms. In some instances, they originate as continental shelves—submerged landmasses—that are exposed when global ocean levels drop. Alternatively, they develop through the gradual process of sedimentation. River currents transport material into the ocean, where it deposits and accumulates over time, eventually building up enough mass to create a new, stable coastal plain. This process highlights the dynamic interaction between fluvial systems and marine environments.
The scale of these formations is immense. In North America, the Gulf Coastal Plain stretches approximately 981 miles from the Gulf of Mexico to the Ohio River, while the Atlantic Coastal Plain spans from the New York Bight down to Florida. Similarly, India features coastal plains extending about 6,150 kilometers from the Rann of Kutch to West Bengal. These regions are not uniform; they encompass diverse subregions, such as the Gippsland Plain in Victoria, Australia, which features barrier dunes and swampy flatlands, and the Swan Coastal Plain in Western Australia, which hosts the city of Perth.
